The "Clean Water for the Community" project, initiated under the auspices of Sheepcare Community Centre and supported by GlobalGiving, was designed to address the urgent need for access to clean and safe drinking water in our community. This report highlights the project’s objectives, implementation progress, outcomes, challenges, and future plans.
Project Objectives
To provide sustainable access to clean and safe drinking water to underserved households within Soweto Slums and beyond
To reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases by promoting the use of clean water.
To create awareness and train community members on water sanitation and hygiene practices.
To develop long-term solutions to water scarcity through infrastructure improvements.
Implementation ProgressActivities Undertaken
Water Infrastructure Development:Installation of a borehole equipped with a solar-powered pump.
Construction of water storage tanks with a capacity of 30000 litres.
Installation of a water filtration system to ensure water quality meets WHO standards.
Community Engagement and Training:
Conducted 3 community workshops on water sanitation and hygiene.
Distributed educational materials on the importance of clean water and proper hygiene practices.
Water Access Points:
Set up 5 water collection points to ensure ease of access for community members.
Prioritized access for schools, and vulnerable households by allowing every child to carry 20litres of water home after school.
Outcomes and Impact
Improved Health:
Recorded a 43% reduction in cases of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
Increased Access:
123 households now have access to clean drinking water, benefiting approximately [number] individuals.
Empowered Community:
56 community members trained on water hygiene practices, leading to increased awareness and better hygiene standards.
Challenges Faced
Community Sensitization: Initial resistance from some community members due to cultural beliefs required additional engagement efforts.
Maintenance Costs: Ensuring regular maintenance of the infrastructure and meeting the Electricity bills which is usually high remains a challenge due to limited funds.
Future Plans
Expansion of Coverage: Extend clean water access to neighboring communities through installation of piping system running through the community so that they can access clean water at tneir door steps.
Capacity Building: Train more community members on the maintenance of the water systems to reduces the high cost of repair and maintanance incurred due to carelessness from some community members
Partnerships: Collaborate with local and international stakeholders to secure additional funding and technical support to easen the expansion of the project
Monitoring and Evaluation: Implement a robust system to track the project's long-term impact and sustainability.
