Capacity Building Enhances Women Helping Themselves
By Linda To | Executive Director
HER Fund has been giving small grants to marginalized women self-help organizations to run programs that allow them to support each other. Programs like hotline support, peer escort to government offices for seeking help, homevisiting, mutual support group and vocational skills learning, all these programs are organized by women members themselves to help other women who are going through the similar life challenges such as faing a divorce, being discriminated due to their race and background for surviving from abuse.
In order to help these small organizations become more sustainable, organizational capacity building is essential , this include training on organizational management, strategic planning, accounting and fundraising knowledge. The members can then manage their organizations in a more structured and systematic way and be more accountable to the public. They can then run their work independently and enhances them to help more women with similar background.

Discussion during training of new immigrant women
A wealthy economy, like Hong Kong does not necessarily indicate a commitment to social change philanthropy, and a developed economy does not necessarily go hand in hand with even distribution of resources. To combat imbalances in resource distribution, there is a strategic need to raise donations to support the capacity building of the small grassroots and marginalized women's organizations, so that they can provide peer to peer service to women facing similar situation as well as organizing collective action to improve the social situation. With the donation, a group of low income women, who are care-givers of the family, were able to conduct a training workshop on organizational management, skills on finance and adminstration and fundraising. This capacity building opportunity allowed them to reflect on their organization's development and to give further insights to them for future growth. Participants became more confident in themselves after the training, which was good to themselves, their families and the community.

Capacity building strengthens women self help
By Linda To | Executive Director, HER Fund
The four self help women's organizations from the marginalized sector, including sex workers, migrants, new immigrant women and single mothers are doing peer support work ranging from hotline service, escort to welfare agencies to advocacy for policy change. This peer mutual help is an effective way to help women in difficult situation, as they can learn from their sisters' sharing and see how they can go through those difficult times and stand on their feet confidently again. In order to sustain this good work, the leaders of the women's groups need to build their organizational capacity. This capacity building program includes skills that can strengthen their organization's administrative and fiancial management, as well as fundraising capacity. We believe this could allow them to build their work on a more solid and substantial ground.
