Elevating youth voices!

By Lory Rivera | Program Weaver & Facilitator

Adults and youth play together during a training.
Adults and youth play together during a training.

Our team in Nepal has reached 164 teachers, caregivers, and students in the five trauma-informed training sessions they’ve held so far this year!

Our participants are forging new connections between youth and adults through play, teamwork, and embracing joy. Training events include team-building games, collaborative excercises, and tea time with young people and their educators. Educators are challenging a culture built on silencing children to show youth what it feels like to be heard and challenged to grow. In doing so, adults are also leaning into healing their own trauma wounds as they witness the positive impact that listening to youth voices has on their lives.

Parents are learning the power of asking their children about the times they’ve been hurt, and children are learning how it feels to be seen and heard by their adults.

One teacher shared during a training how she went home and asked her daughter if she had ever been hurt. Giving her an opportunity to be heard opened up a door for her daughter to share about the hurt she'd been carrying and for the mother to lean into empathy and tend to her daughter's pain. When the mother shared her story, many adults in the space were moved to tears as they related to their own relationships with the children they care for every day. The youth in the space got to witness what it looks like when adults lean into connection, hold space for tears, and practice care for themselves and each other.
