Last November a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit the region of Cianjur in West Java Indonesia, claiming the lives of over 600 people. This earthquake destroyed every home in entire communities.
Mr. Dedi is the head of Rancagoong village. His house, along with all the other homes in the village were leveled to the ground and cannot be reoccupied. Thankfully, Mr. Dedi's family were all either safe or saved from the rubble. But unfortunately, not all residents in Rancagoong could be saved. There were more than 20 residents who died, most of whom were elderly and children.
When the team from Pelita Indonesia came to the disaster site, there were still many residents who had difficulty with food, tents, and medicine. There we had the opportunity to distribute assistance in the form of emergency food packs, tarps for shelter, blankets, sanitation needs, medicines, and some children's needs. Apart from that, we also helped clean up the rubble to make temporary shelters/emergency tents for residents. They are very grateful to all the sponsors (you all!) who were willing to help them in their desperate condition.
We are still active in this area and are now focused on long-term rebuilding and care. We began implementing community development efforts, such as providing ceramic water filters for families in need.
We thank you so much for your generosity and kindness in aiding those that have lost so much in this terrible disaster.
Sincerely,
Chris Rudd and the Pelita Indonesia Team
