Greetings,
We hope that this update finds you well. Here in Guatemala our team members are doing great! Our alternative school has been keeping us busy. During the school break the past few months we had been meeting once a week with a group of around 1 dozen children from 3 to 11. As school (in some form) in likely to start up this month, we are now meeting with the kids just once a month in our town of Itzapa and we have a request to form a new group in the rural village of Chijocon, San Martin where children don't have access to anything close to the activities that we are realizing in our school. Each time we get together we learn about a new country and do 15+ hands on activities and experiments associated with that country. So far we have visited Australia, Russia and Canada. We also focus on practical life skills where children learn manners and how to care for themselves and their surroundings as well as food preparation. We also recently unrolled a reading corner where the kids can take some time out to flip through their choice of books. We currently have raised funds for providing the snack for our Itzapa group for the entire year and any additional funds we raise will be used to provide snack for the Chijocon children. In this update you will find photos of examples of some of the hands on learning activities that were made possible through your support.
As always thank you for being part of this great project!
Best wishes,
Colleen

Exciting plans in the works!

We hope this update finds you well. When we first conceptualized this project we envisioned leisurely game afternoons with groups of disadvantaged children in our community. Then the coronavirus pandemic erupted and changed the world as we know it. Since the coronavirus outbreak started more than 40,000 Guatemalan children have abandoned their studies. Many of these children live in the communities we work in. For those students who have remained in school, their education these past few months has been limited to packages of worksheets sent home from the schools. Once we saw the devastating effects the pandemic is having on children's education we began to seek training in Montessori education and we are currently developing learning modules in the style of a traveling hands on children's museum in an attempt to enrich children's learning and to help fill in the gaps the coronavirus has left. The funds you provided are being used to develop our first module, a science based exploration of the universe pictured in the photos in this update. Through this module, students will learn about the size of the universe; the order, appearance and sizes of the planets; the moon cycles, how craters are formed; some constellations and the basic steps of a scientific experiment. All while having fun! We hope to reach hundreds of children with each module and have plans for additional modules in areas such as the major organ systems and their organs, mathematics, birds, sea animals, landmarks of the world and more! Getting back on track after Covid-19
By Colleen Supanich | Project Leader
When we started planning this project several months ago, we had no idea how our lives and work were about to be impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. In the interest of our community members safety, this and all projects which require the gathering of people in groups have been canceled. We are planning and getting ready for the day when government restrictions are lifted and we can once again get together in groups. Our group of kids are also eargerly awaiting the day we can start up this project as they have been largely confined to their homes for the past 3 months. It is our hope that the next project report we send will be to update you on the inauguration of this project. Thank you for your support!
