Six months already!

We have now reached the 6-month mark of the project! Time seems to be flying by and with each passing day, we are reaching more people in the most remote regions of Guinea Bissau. So far with this porject we have managed to reach over 1300 people, bringing them safe drinking water and working alongside them to install family latrines and educate on the dangers of poor sanitation. The number of women in the villages who are reporting more confidence to participate in community decision making and the number of men reporting more supportive attitudes and behaviour towards women's role in decision making as a result of training with WellFound are already in the hundreds. We are thrilled to have reached so many people but do not plan on stopping any time soon. With village committee’s set up and actively managing their community resources along with education workshops on health, sanitation and women’s empowerment, we are seeing good progress in the villages.

All of this has not been easy, however, and we must thank you our hard-working staff on the ground who make this work possible. Anopoco, Eticunda, Acuminca, Etinghoure and Ancano are extremely remote villages and for WellFound staff simply getting there is not easy, never mind transporting heavy equipment, drilling wells and ensuring that communities have all the necessary resources they need. Joao, our Project Manager in Guinea Bissau has been working tirelessly to make sure that operations run smoothly and every village is engaged and has total ownership of their wells, market gardens and other village programmes. Hertumisa is our Community Health Promoter and has been doing fantastic work to help people in these remote locations realise the dangers of poor sanitation. Much of Hertumisa’s work in the communities highlights the serious benefits of safe hygiene practices and how this can prevent a whole range of health problems. We have also managed to train several young women from the villages in natural medicine and first aid as well as how to identify and treat water borne illnesses. Our agricultural workers have been working hard to educate women on how to successfully grow a variety of crops in the newly established market gardens and we are seeing good yields.

WellFound would not get very far without you, our donors. Through your generosity and kind contributions, we can keep fighting to bring change to those who need it most. We would like to take this opportunity to truly thank you for all that you have given.

We have achieved a lot in the past six months but there is still plenty of work left to do. Unfortunately, we do not yet live in a world where everybody has access to basic human rights. However, if we all do our part, whether as donors, volunteers or staff on the ground and with everybody’s dedication, encouragement and support, we can live in a world where people do have access to clean and safe drinking water, where people do not have to worry about outdated and avoidable diseases like cholera and dysentery and where everybody’s opinions, rights and lives are valued and respected.
