Case Study: Elisa

Elisa, 41 years old:

Elisa is the leader of the Women’s Group in her village.

Elisa has seven children and was responsible for raising them, all domestic duties and fetching water for the entire family, a big task for mum, dad and seven kids. Due to the demanding nature of having to fetch water as well as having no help with raising the children, Elisa was unable to get a job and earn additional income to help the family.

The situation with water in the village was very serious, all women had to get water from swamps far away from community, often having to wait in long queues each visit (and a family of nine requires multiple trips every
day). Hopes were raised when members of the community were told that it was possible to get water right at the centre of the village, an NGO tried to dig near the school, but the water was not drinkable.

Women spent hours getting water from the swamps, the water was not safe to drink but was the only source for miles around. As a result, the residents experiences chronic problems such as diarrhoea and water borne illnesses, especially among children. There are no nearby health centres so accessing medical help is often not possible or may take several days. When WellFound came to Elisa's village with the intention of starting a project, it was a great joy to everyone in the village, especially the women.

Soon enough, the well was complete, and the Market Garden was up and running.

“All women were part of [the] Market Garden and they appointed me [Elisa] as president of the women’s group. Since we started the market garden a lot of things have changed. Now every woman is at market garden and has
access to water, we are earning something for our family. Now I could pay school fees for my children with the help of the market garden. [Since then] we have never stopped planting and our children’s lives have improved a lot. We have safe water in our houses and in the containers at the market garden for plants. Now, the village is different, having safe water, market garden and latrines. I would like to give big thanks to the British people who helped us in this condition, may God bless you.”
