Technology Access for Public Schools

VHF has successfully completed another project to Advance Education through Technology! Your donation enables VHF to continuosly serve public schools in Nigeria, Guyana, Kenya, Philippines, Jamaica and Zambia. Every year as part of our partnership commitment with The Atlanta Montego Bay Sister Cities Committee, we embark on projects in the Philippines and Jamaica. We just returned from Jamaica in October 2018, where we donated to St. James High School in Montego Bay and Ashton All Age Primary Westmoreland, Jamaica.

St James High received a projector while Ashton All Age received five computers with Internet connectivity, loaded with Microsoft Office Suite 2016, Adobe Acrobat and anti-virus software.

The students and staff of both schools were delighted with their donations and showed the utmost gratitude and appreciation! St James High school went as far as treating our team to a delicious Jamaican cuisine, and presented VHF with a gift of the school’s personalized mug and pin. We had the opportunity to meet with Ms. Barbara Cunningham (IT instructor), and Mr. Joseph Williams (Principal), and discussed ongoing technology needs for the school.

Equally, the Principal of Ashton All Age Westmoreland expressed her appreciation for the five computers donated along with an Internet subscription. Before VHF’s computer donation to Ashton All Age, the students did not have any access to any computers or Internet. Mr. Williams remarked: “VHF’s donation will be used to improve teaching and learning and help our students be successful. Education doesn't stop at the end of the school day because students have access to teachers, resources, and assignments via the web and access these resources at any time. With the projector donation, rather than writing notes across a board, teachers can make use of PowerPoint presentations, images and even film as teaching tools. Consequently, teachers and students alike find projectors to be useful classroom devices.Prior to the use of projectors in the classroom, teachers had to spend time writing notes on the board, as well as erasing information due to limited space. Projectors facilitate the planning process so teachers can decide on lecture content and important points ahead of time instead of making decisions spontaneously”.

Technology Access to Public Schools

We’re pleased to announce another milestone at Victoria House Foundation (VHF). From our recent completion of projects (June, 2018) in Kenya at the Kibera Calvary school Kenya, and two campuses of City Gates Academy in Antipolo and Coron in the Philippines, we continue to deliver on our goal to Advance Education through Technology. You have kep our project alive and made it possible for VHF to expand its work to other parts of the developing world!

Over the last several months, we have been working with Steve Blau and Julie of Mclean Bible church of Virginia who now individually support Kibera Calvary. Both Steve and Julie were very instrumental in the delivery of the computers to Kibera Calvary in Kenya. The school never owned a computer until now. The students will be able to learn how to use basic Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. VHF is in the process of subscribing to Internet connectivity for the school.

VHF City Gate Academy project in Antipolo, Philippines was a fun project. Every project has challenges and its rewards. Due to collaborative team work from the outset made the challenges considerably easier to overcome and ensured a successful implementation of the project. VHF installed and setup four computers each in different classrooms at the campus in Antipolo. We also setup and configured Wi-Fi for wireless access. The City Gate Coron campus were the beneficiary of two computers. The students in Coron can now take advantage of the various software that provides educational activities and learning for kids.

In a few months VHF will deploy five more computers in the computer lab which will allow not only the students of City Gates access but also the general public. Our gratitude to Pastor Glenn and his team for the hospitality. Many thanks to our donors and those who support our mission to under-served public schools in developing countries and the inner cities of the U.S.

Technology Access to Public Schools In Nigeria

Nigerian Project

In 2013, when The Victoria House Foundation began its project in Nigeria we focused on one school; Ikeja Junior Grammar School. VHF donated and deployed computers and internet connectivity in a computer lab that was not functional. Since the VHF donation, students have taken advantage of access to resources online showing tremendous improvement with the use of the Internet doing research, and additionally Microsoft applications particularly Word and Excel Suites. Skills that are essential in the global marketplace. With your generous donations, we have been able to extend our work to other schools including Government Day Secondary School Wuse in Abuja. In the latter part of 2018, we plan on extending this benefit to Benin Technical College Edo State, Nigeria, and Government Secondary School Kaduna. For the students of these schools, providing computers and Internet connectivity to them has consistently improved their learning. Reports from the schools have shown that proficiency has improved in a number of subjects, including Science, Math, and English. "Students received more feedback on their writing, edited and revised their papers more often, drew on a wider range of resources to write, and published or shared their work with others more often". The IT instructor at Government Day Secondary School Wuse explained. "Coming to school and knowing that I'll have a computer and Internet to use is very exciting and makes learning more fun". Theriza Kegh, a student at Government Day Secondary School Wuse, Abuja.

Access to computers and Internet is worth the cost and effort because it has lifted the student's achievement, enhanced engagement and enthusiasm among students, improved teacher-student relationships and it's helping to promote 21st-century skills such as technological proficiency and problem solving. The students still have a lot to learn and are incorporating these skills into their studies. VHF hopes to expand on this tremendous progress and are hoping to include coding and robotics training for future projects. Your support has been invaluable in making these projects possible and we are tremendously thankful. We look forward to further updating you on our ongoing progress.
