Ya’axché’s Education and Outreach team has been busily engaging enthusiastic young people across the Maya Golden Landscape (MGL) in everything from community cleanups and fire safety lessons to painting signs that encourage environmental responsibility.
In Trio, the Environmentalist Club teamed up with the local Community Health Worker to lead a community-wide cleanup. This initiative went beyond picking up trash—it was also about showing community pride and spreading awareness about the connection between a clean environment and public health. Armed with gloves, garbage bags, and plenty of energy, they cleared plastic and household waste from roadsides and riverbanks.
The Community Health Worker spoke with residents about the health risks of improper waste disposal and the importance of keeping their surroundings clean. Participants shared how the experience sparked a stronger interest in sustainability and desire to continue the momentum. There was a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing they had made a difference for their families and neighbours.
In Golden Stream, students from the Government School’s Environmental Club got creative to raise awareness on campus. With support from Ya’axché- who provided paint and plywood- they designed and painted bold, positive messages about cleanliness and caring for the environment. These signs now decorate the school grounds, acting as daily reminders for students and staff to take pride in their space.
Building on the enthusiasm of youth-driven energy, Ya’axché’s Community Outreach, and Livelihoods visited five primary schools in nearby communities to talk about fire safety and management. These sessions gave students a solid introduction to the causes and effects of fire, the importance of safety gear, and how to handle fire responsibly—especially when it comes to farming and waste disposal.
The highlight of these sessions were a hands-on demonstration where students tried on real firefighter gear and learned how to use firefighting tools. They practiced how to stay safe around fire and even took part in a fire drill to put their new skills to the test.
These- and other activities- are possible because of the generous support of our donors. Young people across the MGL are stepping up as environmental stewards and making real, lasting change in their communities. Together, we’re helping build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Maya Golden Landscape.
