Celebrated annually on April 22, Earth Day is recognized worldwide through events demonstrating and promoting environmental protection. It honors the achievements of the environmental movement and raises awareness to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. Earth Day was celebrated under this year's theme “Restore our Earth.” Ya’axché acknowledges the necessity to protect and recover our planet to combat climate change and environmental degradation. In commemoration of this year’s Earth Day, our team and local community members planted seedlings in degraded and cleared areas of river bank within two Maya Golden Landscape (MGL) communities, Big Falls and Medina Bank. In addition to helping restore this area of the MGL, these communities will directly benefit from the ecosystem services provided by healthy rivers and riparian zones; as Ya’axché’s Education and Outreach Officer states “it is something good to regenerate the forest along the river since the community's people depend on the river for activities such as bathing, washing, drinking water and fishing.”
In both villages, Inga (Inga Edulis) and Cedar (Cedrela mexicana) tree saplings, provided by Ya’axché’s nursery, were planted along the banks of the Rio Grande and Deep River, to provide for erosion control and water quality conservation. In Big Falls, four youths and one parent along with Ya’axché staff participated. These youths were thrilled to plant these tree saplings along the river especially because of the threat of the river running dry due to the clearing on the banks. The Rio Grande is a vital water source utilized by numerous Big Falls residents, including youth, and this planting activity helped to illustrate to both the youths and villages the importance of restoring this crucial ecosystem. In Medina Bank, six youths worked to plant Inga and Cedar saplings along their village’s main river,Deep River. These youths clearly recognize the significance of planting a tree especially in an area which is vital to restore. Overall, Earth day was a success since thirty tree saplings were planted within the two communities. Ya’axché expects to continue working towards large-scale change to RESTORE our planet EARTH with your kind contribution. Let's make a difference!
