The Safer World Fund

Today, October 7, 2011, marks the 10^th anniversary of the start of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.  We’re marking this moment by thanking you for supporting grassroots development, education, and medical work in Afghanistan and Pakistan through the Safer World Fund.

We are grateful for your support, and we can assure you that your donations, (which have been matched at 50% if you gave on or after September 11, 2011) will soon be put to work through important projects like this one:

Expand And Supply A School For 3,000+ Afghan Girls is a project run by Ayni Education International.  Some of the Safer World Funds will outfit a new school building with desks, fans, and other necessary supplies in order to serve the nearly 4,000 girls who will now have a chance to learn. 

Recently, the founder of Ayni Education International asked one girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. The girl’s answer was remarkable; “A doctor, of course.”

Thank you for giving these girls the opportunity to learn and thrive in Afghanistan. After all, many of these girls will someday become mothers, and we believe that educated, healthy mothers are more likely to raise sons who will build rather than destroy.

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the events of 9/11 took place in 2001.  That day’s events still weigh heavily on our hearts and minds as we remember loved ones lost.  Despite those sentiments, however, the Safer World Fund was created as a way to make a positive statement about what September 11^th means to people, break down the extremism and fear on which terrorism survives, and help provide education and health care to those who need it. 

This year, the Safer World Fund will be supporting a group of highly effective projects in Afghanistan and Pakistan that focus on providing schooling and health care for the Afghan and Pakistani citizens, with a particular focus on women and girls.  And starting September 11, 2011, there are $50,000 of matching funds available to the Safer World Fund and each of its beneficiary projects on GlobalGiving.  Donations to any of those projects will be matched at 50% until funds are depleted, with a $1,000 matching limit per donor per project, and a $15,000 matching limit per project overall.  You can view all participating projects and matching funds remaining here: http://www.globalgiving.org/leaderboards/safer-world.
