Update on the Teacher Training Programme

Hello!

Great teachers help create great students. It critical to pay close attention to how we train and support both new and experienced teachers.

This term our teachers benefitted from a range of specialised support from three experienced and renowned teachers in the local community. Mr Mwago, Mr Kamau and Mr Karanja have given up their time to come to Roko 20 Academy and spend time training our teachers to better support our students in areas where they are struggling, specifically maths.

Mr Mwago, who is an ICT expert provided our teachers with vital training. He installed coding software on our computers to train teachers on how coding works. Virtual Zoom teaching is on the cards. Mr Mwago also introduced some virtual teaching such as quizz.com and Kahoot.

Mr Karanja, our Maths specialist helped teachers form maths tutorial groups and this term our Grade 6 and 7 classes have benefitted from additional support in this area.

Mr Kamau's organisational skills have been put to good use supporting teachers in the proper preparation of lesson plans, schemes, assessment reports and relevant documentation to enable good coverage and execution of the syllabus.

We are using the assessment and examination to gauge the pupils’ performance and be able to help them improve in their weak areas. Our teachers also conducted several continuous assessment tests to evaluate pupil’s achievement on the topic’s contents.

We are delighted that all of Grade 3 sat for MLP (Monitoring Learner Progress) and all successfully completed the assessment.

Our Class 7 continued to be among the top 4 schools in Gikindu zone while Class 6 moved up from position 8 to 6 in the new Term Opener exam (League table, 2nd of November 2021).

News Update

Bringing you news from Kenya and hoping that you are all well and enjoying a somewhat less restrictive summer season.

Covid-19 has not had such a catastrophic impact as was feared. As of July 21, a total of 1,648,869 vaccines had been administered across the country. Of these total first doses were 1,042,455 while second doses were 606,414. The proportion of fully vaccinated adults in the country was reported at 2.2 per cent, according to the Health Ministry. President Uhuru Kenyatta has assured that by December 2021, 10 million adults will have been vaccinated against COVID-19. We are optimistic.

Our teaching programme is going from strength to strength due to a collaboration with, Mr Kamau and Mr Karanja who have provided many days of training, and who continuously support and monitor teacher’s progress. There is a significant academic improvement for Classes 5 and 6. At the end of term 3 exam results are collated for the zonal schools league table. Our class 5 went from 4^th place in Term 2 to second place at the end of term 3. Class 6 made a move from being in 8^th position to now being 6^th out of the ten schools. A good result which shows that the programme is effective. We are very grateful to both Mr Kamau and Mr Karanja for their support.

A new Head teacher was appointed to oversee the school. She will support our Manager, Job with administrations and will also head up the training programme, manage and appraise teachers and bring together the team. Welcome Esther Muthoni!

We are looking forward to reopening this week for the start of our new school year. We are positive that this coming year will see rises in academic performance due to the programme we have in place.

How teacher training has improved performance

Class 5 Project

Thanks to your generous contributions in support of our teacher training project we have seen noticeable improvements in teachers’ abilities in the following areas:

1. The importance and use of teaching aids to deliver lessons

2. Sharing knowledge to nurture a solution focused work environment

3. Maintaining an improved professional standard of document presentation in terms of assessment, scheming and lesson planning

4. Increased academic accomplishment as well as a noticeable improvement in the life skills of pupils

Regular teacher supervisions illustrate training needs and helped management to fashion tailored training plans.

Adjusting our teacher training programme has helped us to deliver a more economical Continuous Development Training Programme. This training programme, conducted by a respected local Government Teacher and supported by one of our Board Members (who specialises in teacher training, both in the UK and in Africa) concentrated on the foundations of the new Competency Based Curriculum, learning outcomes and improving the preparation of work schemes and lesson plans.

An intensive 5 five days training was followed-up with another five days of monitoring to ensure that teachers understood and implemented the training. The programme was such a success that we will retain the Trainer’s professional expertise to offer our teachers continuous professional development throughout 2021.

Rest assured, teacher training will remain the forefront of our plans to improve learning at Roko 20 Academy.

Teachers returned to school with a competence and a new confidence in their ability to teach our pupils putting everything they had learnt into practice. Our vision has been and always will be to provide our pupils with the best education possible.
