Take Control! Building Resilience in Nairobi slums

By Kelvin Muli | Monitoring and Evaluation

The Take Control camp happened in August. During the camp period, Level One (Skills of Self) was implemented. The curriculum incorporated the same life skills under the self-category, but only focused on those throughout the week. More field sessions were featured and each day began by introducing the topics in the rugby pitch.

The camp happened at St. Benedict Primary School. It had 150 children (79boys, 71girls) between the ages of 10-15yrs.  The camp was Faciltated by 14 facilitators (5female, 9male) and 3 professional counsellors (2female,1 male).

The image of the SRF Bus was introduced, showing students that life skills and values work together to get us from where we are to where we are going. Life skills and values are what helps us navigate life. Topics presented throughout the week included self-awareness, self-esteem, managing stress and emotions, sexuality, and values.

The most understood constructs by the students included; self-value, self-worth, feelings, emotions, stress, sexuality, self-confidence, awareness around me, and rights to my own body. The table below shows the percentages of correct responses based on topics covered
