Why we spend time with our partners on the ground

By Amber Bauer | CEO

A 4000 grant can restock shelves
A 4000 grant can restock shelves

Your continued support means everything and we can't thank you enough.

Just as our continued support to our partners on the ground means a lot to them. Not least because this sector is challenging, complicated, politically and culturally sensitive, and can be lonely. That's why our team works hard to be there for all our partners and to build a community so they're all there for each other too.

We do this firstly by awarding one-off grants that enable our partners to make critical purchases such as vans, and urgent grants that keep doors open on centres and wheels turning on mobile distributions in the toughest of times.

And it's why our team started 2024 back in Greece spending time in Ioannina, Kos and Athens. Here we learned first-hand how a grant of £4000 could keep food and hygiene shelves stocked in a free shop for four months in Kos, in turn providing vital help to a community of over 4000 refugees. We learned why a £1500 fryer is essential to a kitchen in Athens that provides over 800 fresh, hot meals a day to refugees who wouldn't otherwise eat. And we saw and heard for ourselves why a grant for £3000 was well spent to keep a distribution warehouse that supports NGOs across Greece was a literal lifeline. These, and so much more. We truly know the difference your donation makes.

And our partners value us for so much more. In their own words

"ForRefugees are SO much more than a vital fiscal sponsor: they are our capacity-building support, our hands-on volunteers, our link to each other, our back-up, lifeline, shoulder to cry on. They are our advocate, star story-teller and the team we cannot wait to share our good news with. ForRefugees are the partner who understands our frustrations and works with us to bring solutions to our charities and charity workers. Their passionate support of small charities assists tens of thousands of displaced people each year."

It means a lot to us to hear this from our partners and it's something we're really proud of. We hope you, as part of our family, are proud too?

Being on the ground, not only visiting but volunteering with and spending time with our partners, also means we get to know them really well. We share the graft, we meet the service users, we see the changes to camps and conditions, we speak to people who are refugees and we understand the difference we have made, are making, and can make. We build friendships and trust that's lasting.

Our work is made ever-critical against a backdrop of Governments and large institutions being either unable or unwilling to provide the humanitarian help so urgently needed every year. In the photos you'll see a camp in Greece now - three meter walls, turnstile entries, controlled by fear with loud speakers and 360 degree 24 hour CCTV. As hostility grows, we thank you for being on this challenging journey with us. Together we're making a real difference to real people.

love from Amber and all of us at forRefugees
