Congenital Heart Treatment for Mexican Children

On behalf of everyone on the Kardias’s board and our operational and medical staff, I would
like to thank you for your kind and generous donation.

Kardias was founded 18 years ago with a core mission to provide life-saving open-heart
surgeries for children in Mexico. Our mission is critical given that one of every one hundred
children in Mexico are born with a heart defect, some of which are treatable with the proper
medical care. Kardias provides these children in need with the world-class surgeons and
facilities they deserve at no cost. Kardias gives our patients an opportunity for a new, active and
healthy life.

Today we can fulfill our mission better than ever thanks to your support. We are proud to share
that in February we inaugurated the Kardias Pediatric Heart Center at the American-British
Cowdray Hospital (ABC), which is the most advanced hospital in Mexico. We have also
partnered with the Texas Children Hospital, which provides us with technical and educational
support. This new center and our partnership allow us to increase the complexity and number
of open-heart surgeries we perform.

During the last 3 months Kardias has treated with open heart surgeries in this new center 40 children from underpriviledged economic situations with extraordinary results.

When you give to Kardias it is more than a donation.   You give a chance for a child to live a full and healthy life.  The thanks that we extend to you is of a depth that is difficult to express.   Perhaps if I introduce you to one of our children, who is healthy and alive today, you will better understand our gratitude.

Andrea is an eight-year-old girl who has an identical twin sister. Sadly, when they were a year old, her mother died. The little girl´s older sister, only seventeen at the time, took over the care of the children.  When Andrea turned three, it became apparent that she was not developing properly. She had a congenital heart defect that made it impossible for her to keep up with her twin sister.   This was distressing for both girls. Their older sister was not their legal mother, so she could not authorize the surgery. Eventually the sister was able to officially adopt the girls making it possible for Andrea to have the heart surgery she desperately needed. After Andrea´s operation she quickly caught up with her twin sister and they can now play joyfully together in a way they couldn’t before. The girls “mother” sister has continued to care for the twins even though she now has children of her own.   They live in extreme poverty, but all the children have received scholarships in a private school run by a charity.  Both of the girls are studying violin.   You, as a donor, are a part of this story.  

Many more children that come to Kardias for help have had life-changing and life-saving moments like Andrea’s. It is your donation that allows our passionate and caring surgical and nursing staff to do their work: “fix” a child’s heart.
