Despite the challenges presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our Self-Help Groups in Ethiopia have continued to provide vulnerable women the tools and knowledge needed to achieve autonomy and economic stability. These women have saved, taken, and repaid loans to start up new local businesses and provide for themselves and their families. By being autonomous and financially stable, women are directly preventing the risk of human trafficking.
In addition to economic empowerment, our Self-Help Groups have also trained and educated vulnerable women in financial literacy, trafficking, human rights, safeguarding and child protection.
The generous support from our donors makes it possible to continue our mission to put an end to human trafficking, enabling success stories like that of Nehimia, one of the thousands of women empowered through our Self-Help Groups.
Nehimia was married when she was 19 years old, but soon after the wedding, her husband committed a crime for which he was imprisoned for more than four years, leaving Nehimia on her own to raise and provide for their children.
When one of Hope for Justice’s Community Development Workers invited Nehimia to join a new Self-Help Group that the charity had set up in her Ethiopian village, she was initially hesitant due to her poor economic situation. However, hoping to improve her circumstances, Nehimia agreed to join and began contributing to the savings group.
As her savings have increased, Nehimia has applied for two consecutive loans from the Self-Help Group, which were both approved by the other members. These funds have enabled Nehimia to purchase a cow, develop a small business, buy household materials and repay the first of the loans by the specified date.
Nehimia said: “How could I survive, and even thrive as I am now, unless this Self-Help Group had been started in my area? I am very grateful for the key lessons that I have learned, for the training I have been given, and for the discussions with other members of my community.”
