It has been a really busy few months for the Biochar Kiln team since our last project report! We’re excited to share our progress with you.
The Nepal Communitere (NC) team have been very busy on the manufacturing and production front. Initially, 22 Mild Steel sheets of 2mm thickness were procured from a vendor for cutting along with corrugated sheets. The sheets were cut using a CNC plasma cutter. Assembly is now underway with the team working on rolling, welding and painting our first batch of 30 kilns. Fabrication of the kilns will be completed by early April, at which point they will be transported to Shree Krishna Dhital’s farm outside of Kathmandu.
On the training delivery front, Shree Krishna has been working with local government officials to screen and finalise the list of farmers who will participate in the training workshops. Shree Krishna and officials are also in the process of finalising the structure and content of the workshops, including our biochar graphics.
Shree Krishna will hold a demonstration and trial on his farm in April/May with the farmers to launch the engagement and training with them. Following the demonstration, all 30 kilns will be dispatched to the farmers.
The training workshops will take place over the course of the summer months and will focus on fuel selection; the process of making biochar and maintenance of the biochar kilns. Emissions tests and surveys will be conducted with the farmers following their trials to support data collection and research on the most efficient fuel sources which have the least environmental impact.
If possible, we will also conduct control testing with the farmers, depending on local capacity.
We’re very much looking forward to beginning the demonstration and training phase with farmers in Nepal in the coming months- lots done, more to do as the saying goes!
As always, huge thanks from EWB, Nepal Communitere and our local partners for the crucial part you have played in bringing this project to life.
We look forward to sharing our next update with you in the summer. Until then, take care and enjoy the long sunny days ahead!
