Biochar Kiln Project Update November 2021

By Emma Brown | Program Manager

We have been working away with the Fab Lab in Nepal since our last report in August and have made some great progress bringing the project forward!

The Fablab team completed further analysis of a biochar design provided by EWB Ireland and Farm Social. The team carefully evaluated and documented the components, materials and fabrication processes needed to construct the kiln. Market research was conducted to determine the availability of materials. The fabrication process was then chosen following further discussion with Eoin and Daniel from Farm Social.

The Fablab team held a meeting with Shree Krishna Dhital of Sanskriti Farms to discuss his plan for training sessions with farmers and pilot testing of kilns. The beneficiaries will be identified through his connection with local cooperatives based on agriculture development. A project budget was then drawn up.

EWB and the Fablab team held a meeting in October to discuss budget, financial transfers and the content and structure of training sessions. EWB Ireland will use graphics developed by our partner graphic artist to visually communicate how the kilns work and the process of biochar production.

Together we have confirmed an MOU for our project and a final project budget. EWB will shortly make the first transfer to the Fablab so the team can commence manufacture of the kilns. We are very excited to see the first batch of kilns produced!

We would like to sincerely thank all our donors for the part you have played in making this project a reality. Wishing you a safe and joyful end to 2021.

Looking forward to sharing our next update with you in 2022!

Best wishes

Emma & all the EWB Ireland Team
