Dear friend,
As springtime arrives in Kabul, I would like to share how your support is mobilizing hope for children in Afghanistan.
A few weeks ago, one of our Librarians from the Yellow Van Library shared a touching story that shows how our work goes beyond providing literacy support. She told us about a six-year-old girl who has been visiting our Yellow Mobile Library since early 2025. This little girl surprised both her mother and our Librarian when she unexpectedly spoke aloud for the first time in 18 months.
Her mother had previously told our team that the girl had stopped speaking, and despite visiting multiple doctors, no one had been able to help. Our team made sure she felt welcome at the Library, and over time, she grew to love story time and drawing. One day, she brought a piece of cake with her. As she was leaving, the Librarian noticed she had left the cake behind. When the Librarian tried to return it, the little girl spoke—insisting that the piece of cake be given to the Librarian.
We don’t know why she stopped speaking, but what we do know is that our Libraries offer a space where children feel safe. We know our team works tirelessly to ensure every child feels valued and knows their voice matters. Your support is vital—not only in providing literacy programs, but in offering hope to children and their families.
On behalf of our team and the children in Kabul, thank you for helping our Libraries continue to bring hope and acceptance to the children of Afghanistan.
Warm regards,
Freshta Karim
