Dear Readers,
In October 2020, MAITS trained four therapists from AURA to become the "Trainer of Trainers" based on MAITS Community Health Worker Empowerment programme.
ACELP is a voluntary organization in Karachi working for over 30 years for the welfare of children with developmental delays. It provides diagnostics, special education, therapies, and vocational training.
Following this 8 day training delivered by MAITS Master Trainers, ACELP therapists trained 15 Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Karachi. The CHWs were offered supervision by the therapists for the entire year as the CHWs were supporting 60 families with special needs children in their local community. MAITS received M&E data that was collected quarterly to report the progress of children and their families. The feedback shares impressive results showing how the quality of live improved for these families by learning basic activities of daily living from the CHWs. The CHWs conduct home visits and build cordially relations with the families and hence are seen as an extended family member or a well wisher who is there to offer support considering the resources easily available resources.
We are attaching statistical report that was compiled in March 2023 to show the progress made by 26 children who were benefitted from this programme.
The highlights from the analysis are as follows:
From the baseline reports, we can see that toileting, brushing teeth, dressing and bathing were a particular area of improvement for this group.
Iqra, our incredible Community Health Worker shared with us:
"I have been supporting a 3-year-old girl named Fatima over the course of the year following the MAITS training. Fatima, lives in Karachi and is cared for by her mother. She has Down Syndrome and her general health is good. She participates in family life and is generally a happy child. She struggled with communication and had some behavioural problems. By the end of the visits, Fatima’s sleeping issues had greatly improved and the mother was feeling more confident in her ability to look after her. Fatima is also happy to help with home chores but still doesn't like going to school. I will continue to support Fatima to encourage her to attend school, Fatima's mother feels her awareness of having a special needs child has improved and she has more skills to cope with looking after her."
*we are not sharing Fatima's pictures to honor her mother's consent.
MAITS has been able to make a significant difference to the lives of Fatima's family and other 1.4M children around the world. Your generous donations are always needed to enable us to build local capacity and continue to offer support to those who need it the most.
There are ways through which you can help; offering funding, offering your skills, suggesting an international disability organisation to offer our training too (trainings are free of cost!).
