United Families Against Torture and for Human Rights, is an organization that is composed of people who have achieved their freedom and continue in the process of seeking justice and truth, as well as their relatives who are mostly women; mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts and nieces, who from love promote justice for their relatives, facing the impunity of the State. About 50 families are members of this organization and belong to the municipalities of Chilón, Cintalapa, Jiquipilas, La Concordia, Palenque, Pichucalco, Playas de Catazajá, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Teopisca, Venustiano Carranza and Villaflores, all of them in the state of Chiapas.
Within the theme of walking with torture survivors and their families, Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba) intended to form a Social Defense Process with relatives of torture survivors; the first step was to bring them together to discuss their experiences and organize. Thus, in 2021, the Meeting of Families Survivors of Torture in Chiapas "Sharing Hope" was held in San Cristóbal de las Casas. It was not the first year that families met, but it was the first year of a new organization.
2021 was a complicated year, we were still in the middle of a health crisis caused by the COVID-19, it is because of this evento that public institutions did not work 100%, limiting work to the essential, many legal cases were suspended, no clear answer as to when they could be taken back; that is why the organization of victims and relatives of torture cases was of the utmost importance; health protocols such as the use of facemask at all times were followed, healthy distance and everything necessary for this activity to take place.
The intention of this process is to provide the necessary mechanisms and strategies that help to counter the actions of the State and make it cases visible. In this way, and in the last year, United Families have mobilized in public actions ranging from written statements through their social networks and press releases, which as an ally Frayba replies. In the last year they have demonstrated in the context of Villaflores, since most families have cases there, concentrating and making visible the context of this municipality denouncing the bad practices of the municipality police and the Prosecutor’s Office; They have also expressed themselves in the case of Carlos, Jonny, Luis, Alfredo, Cesar and José; likewise in the framework of March 8, International Women’s Day.
In Frayba we are committed to creating spaces of knowledge and exchange, in a framework of trust, in which torture survivors and their families can count on all the strategies of mutual accompaniment, generate collective discourses and build demand platforms in front of the Mexican State. That is why we want to call for solidarity, to be part of this change and to strengthen United Families Against Torture and for Human Rights.
