The horrors of the recent and ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has devastating consequences for children and young people in the wider region. They are not only witnesses to the horrors of war but are also direct victims, facing the physical and psychological repercussions of violence, displacement, and poverty.
Recently, in Syria, petrol has risen by 400% from € 0,20 to 1,05 per liter, against an average monthly salary of $18. In Aleppo, the majority of families today have less than 4 hours of public electricity per day. Higher fuel prices mean commuting, working every day or taking the school bus is more expensive. But it also impacts homes that can no longer heat in the winter when temperatures are extremely cold and homes very poorly insulated.
Brother Georges Sabé of the Blu Marists of Aleppo writes: “Everything is getting more expensive by the day....I am thinking of all the parents whose children are starting the new school year. Supplies and school fees are so expensive that, for a single child, they represent more than half the parents' annual salary. My thoughts also go out to the young people. Yes, all those young people who have only one idea in their heads: to get out of the country and go anywhere, anyhow, the sooner the better. Hope and anxiety are the two dominant feelings...”
Education becomes a crucial component in mitigating the impact of conflict on children and young people. Schools can provide a sense of stability, routine, and normalcy amid chaos. They offer a safe space where children can receive not only formal education but also emotional and psychological support. Moreover, education plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty and offering these young individuals a pathway to a better future.
In conflict zones, however, schools often become targets, and the education system is severely disrupted. The lack of access to quality education further exacerbates the challenges faced by children and young people. Initiatives that focus on rebuilding and maintaining schools, providing psychosocial support, and ensuring access to education for allare critical in such contexts.
The Blu Marists of Aleppo organization plays a pivotal role in supporting education initiatives for children affected by conflict. By investing in education, they contribute not only to the immediate well-being of the young population but also to the long-term stability and development of the entire region.
Prioritizing education and rebuilding schools is essential for creating a foundation for peace and stability in the region, offering hope for a brighter future for the next generation.
Please continue to help us bringing education to children in Aleppo and share our project with your friends and family to support even more children and give them a future.
Thank you,
