The "Spirulina for Malnourished Children in Ethiopia" project, owned and implemented by Tiruzer Ethiopia for Africa (TEA), aims to address malnutrition among vulnerable groups, particularly school children aged 7-18 years and pregnant and lactating mothers aged 25-42 years. This project is being implemented in two IDP centers in Debre Birhan, Amhara Region, where displaced populations face heightened vulnerability to malnutrition. Spirulina, a nutrient-dense supplement, has been provided to help improve nutrition, boost immunity, and promote overall health.
Progress and Activities:
Over the reporting period, Spirulina supplements were distributed to 50 school children (aged 7-18 years) and 15 pregnant and lactating mothers (aged 25-42 years) residing in the two IDP centers in Debre Birhan, Amhara Region. These individuals were selected based on their high nutritional needs due to displacement and challenging living conditions.
Key activities completed during this period include:
Supplement Distribution and Monitoring:
Spirulina supplements were distributed to 50 school children and 15 pregnant and lactating mothers. Health workers in the IDP centers in Debre Birhan are conducting follow-up checks to ensure proper usage and to monitor the recipients' health progress.
Awareness Campaigns and Education:
Tiruzer Ethiopia for Africa (TEA) conducted community education sessions in the IDP centers to inform caregivers and parents about the nutritional benefits of Spirulina. These sessions focused on how Spirulina can support children's growth and provide health benefits to pregnant and lactating mothers, helping to build trust in the product.
Collaboration with Local Health Centers:
We have been working closely with local health centers in Debre Birhan to monitor the health of recipients and ensure the integration of Spirulina distribution with other available health services.
Health Monitoring and Early Results:
Initial assessments indicate positive health outcomes. Many children have gained weight, and their energy levels have increased, which is also positively impacting their academic participation. Pregnant mothers have reported improvements in their energy levels and overall health, leading to healthier pregnancies.
Challenges:
Logistical Challenges in IDP Areas:
Delivering Spirulina to remote IDP centers in Debre Birhan posed logistical difficulties. We are addressing these challenges by working on improving transportation infrastructure and distribution processes to ensure timely and consistent delivery.
Adjusting to the Needs of Displaced Populations:
Displaced populations in the IDP centers have diverse backgrounds, and some families were initially hesitant to incorporate Spirulina into their diets. Tiruzer Ethiopia for Africa (TEA) is actively engaging with these communities through additional educational sessions and peer-sharing of success stories to overcome these concerns.
Success Stories:
Case Study – Jemila Endis (15 years old):
Jemila, a 15-year-old school child from one of the IDP centers in Debre Birhan, had been suffering from malnutrition, which affected her academic performance and overall health. After starting the Spirulina supplements, Jemila showed noticeable weight gain, an increase in energy, and greater participation in school activities. Her teachers have reported improvements in her focus and academic achievements.
Case Study – Monia Ahmmed (38 years old):
Monia, a 38-year-old pregnant woman from one of the IDP centers in Debre Birhan, had been struggling with fatigue and malnutrition. After receiving Spirulina supplements, Monia reported feeling much more energetic and healthier. She has gained weight, and her pregnancy is progressing well, positively impacting her health and that of her unborn child.
Plans for the Next Period:
Conclusion:
The Spirulina for Malnourished Children in Ethiopia project, led by Tiruzer Ethiopia for Africa (TEA), has made significant strides in improving the health and nutritional status of vulnerable children and mothers in two IDP centers in Debre Birhan. The early results are promising, and we are committed to expanding the program to support more displaced individuals and vulnerable communities in Ethiopia.
