Shared Pot: A Silent Effort, A Lasting Impact

Dear friends,

It has been a long time since our last update, but not because we’ve forgotten you. Quite the opposite. As a small non-profit with only two permanent staff since 2021, we are constantly balancing between keeping our projects alive and managing the immense workload that comes with them. We are, in many ways, like jugglers—doing everything we can to keep the momentum going, ensuring that our communities continue receiving the support they need. And through it all, we remain deeply grateful for you.

In recent months, donations have decreased, and we understand why. The world is going through difficult times, and there are so many urgent causes demanding attention. This is why we are even more grateful for those of you who have stood by us, giving what you can, month after month, year after year. Whether there are four donors or just one, we see you, and we appreciate you.

Despite the challenges, we have continued delivering food to the children of Paraíso. In our last three deliveries, we supported 140 children from the kindergarten in the community—ensuring they had access to nutritious meals in a context where food insecurity remains a harsh reality. According to a recent FAO report, 51.7% of the population in Peru is still suffering from food insecurity, and among them are these children.

We don’t often speak loudly about what we do, but it is in our actions where you will see the impact.

As much as we would love to continue Shared Pot, its future remains uncertain due to limited donations. However, Nexos Comunitarios will keep working on other projects that support vulnerable communities. We hope you will continue to stand with us, helping us keep this organization afloat. We are still only two people—but with you, we are much more.

The surroundings of the Shared Pot initiative

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your donations! For each of them and especially, to those who have commmitted to our purpose, monthly.

We have been extremely busy. Peru's food insecurity level have increased up until 50% of the population and the prices of the food have risen as well. The reasons behind it rely on the impact of climate change (communities in the Andes that produce potaotes and others are experiencing drought, after a challenging time when they couldnt get as much as fertilizer as they needed), and levels of inflation in our country. According to Peruvian economist, our economy won't grow this year. This situation, after the two years of pandemic, have put many people in complicated contexts.

However, we, Peruvians, are resourceful and women are leaders on this. While the situation remains like this, during the last 6 months, we have been working with women of the community (all of them are part of the Shared Pot initiative) to offer knitting and embroidery. This initaitive has taken all of our efforts and gladly, we have been able to find some opportunities for them.

Within the next days, we will be starting a new fundraiser in this platform, to raise money for this project. In less than a year, the group of knitters (and mothers of the Shared Pot inititaive) have been able to collaborate in two different projects with two Peruvian brands. For the last one, they have made all the pieces using crochet.

We celebrate these accomplishments and now that it is the beginning of a long path, in which we are not looking for another paliative to their situation, but for an opportunity in which they improve their lives and enjoy their wellbeing. This initiative also has an impact on the Shared Pot initiative, as the income has improved a bit (despite the current challenges mentioned above).

To finish, this week, we will also visiting the community and briging food with the donations we have received throughout these months. We decided to have a good amount to reduce the cost on transportation and give a significant donation. We will share another report with you before the end of the week.

Usually, the projects measure whether the goals are accomplished or not, but there is so much more that surround the project, the communities and the reality and this project has allowed to go beyond delivering the food and to link one initiative with another, with the intention to contribute to their wellbeing (which, of course, include food).

Changing our strategy for 2023

Hello everyone,

We hope you are well.

If you have been following the news, you know that our country is experiencing, probably, its worst political and social crisis in decades. After two months of this situation, I wrote a message last week. You can read it, here. My intention was to share my perspective as a Peruvian and a citizen who comes from different experiencies in a very complex country.

This crisis, that started on December 7th from a failed coup lead by our former president: Castillo, generated many challenges for all of us. For a country that had more than 200,000 deaths during the pandemic, this crisis arrives as an extra drop of pain that, in accumulation with what happened two years ago, generates exhaustation, tiredness and (more) lack of trust among us. In conclusion, our current situation is a very complex one.

Among all of it, we have been reflection on how to proceed under this uncertain context. This is the reason why we believe, this project is coming to an end. There is still need to support the shared pot, but although food is a priority, the amoung of money we raised and the periodicity we receive it does not allow to help our community partneres as we would have wanted to.

BUT, in collaboration with our community partners, we will be looking for other opportunities in order to keep helping them. We will share the news with you, when we are ready.

With the money we will receive soon, we will deliver food and after it, we will be sending you our final report.
