She's Learning to Fly

Nembuan Interviews for University
Nembuan Interviews for University

Nembuan Loserian is a 22-year-old Masai woman from the remote village of Malambo, in northern Tanzania, and the oldest of ten children. In school, her favorite subject is “any subject with mathematics, as I like mathematics so much.” Since she was a child, she has dreamed of being a pilot—specifically, a humanitarian relief pilot in her home country.  She remembers seeing small planes coming to her village as a little girl, and she would run to the runway and ask the pilots—always European men—questions about the planes and how they worked. To say that her chosen career is an unusual one for a Masai woman is an understatement!

She started studying at Nehemiah Gateway University (NGU) this December in our Bachelor’s program of Economy and Business. Her desire to learn to fly, and to use aviation to bring needed medical and humanitarian relief supplies to remote villages in Tanzania, impressed the interview committee at the university. NG founder Arnold Geiger connected her with Matthias Wuttke, founder of Christian Charity Flyers (CCF) soon after she began her studies. CCF is a Swiss nonprofit that has been combining aviation and charity work since 2003. Mr. Wuttke agreed to meet with Nembuan, and to teach her how to fly! He has already begun working with her on the written part of the licensing process, and will begin practical training after that. When she graduates, Nembuan will not only have a solid foundation to help her start a successful aviation business, but also the technical knowledge to realize her dream of flying a plane.

This is just one example of how Nehemiah Gateway University works creatively with partners to integrate classroom and real-world experience, so that students like Nembuan can realize their dreams and begin to make a positive difference in the world.

This Mother’s Day, why not give the gift of education, in honor of the mothers in your life? When you donate to NGU’s Scholarship Fund, you can select “Donate in honor,” and send an electronic or paper card to your mother—just in time for Mother’s Day!

All the best,

Sarah Pita
