I want to personally thank you for supporting Greenhill's expansion over these past few years.

Thanks to you, we have been able to build state-of-the-art dog housing, and a state-of-the-art veterinary medical facility. We have been able to improve the care and housing that we provide for cats, and for all the rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals we care for.

Thanks to you, we have been able to remain open through the pandemic, and we were there for the animals and families who were impacted by the Holiday Farm fire. We were there for this community through the most difficult times. And thanks to you, we are here for this community now, ready to take on whatever comes our way.

In the next months ahead, we are going to continue working on expanding the level of care that we can provide for animals, we are going to continue expanding access for the community, and we are going to continue working on better ways to address disaster scenarios.

Your continued support through this campaign will enable us to purchase a digital x-ray machine which will enable us to provide on-site diagnostics for animals with injuries. This will enable us to reduce stress, and quickly provide treatments to reduce pain and suffering.

Your continued support through this campaign will also enable us to continue expanding access to our services for people and animals that need them. The pandemic has created serious challenges that need to be addressed. Your support will help us meet these challenges.

And this year, your continued support will enable us to meet the demands of future disasters we might experience in our community. We will be expanding our shelter's ability to weather long-term disaster scenarios so that whenever there are animals or people in need, we can be confident that Greenhill will be standing-by ready to care for them.

Thanks to you, Greenhill has been able to meet the challenges this community is facing. Thanks to you, Greenhill is able to ensure that animals are safe and families with pets have a safety net.

Put to the Test

A humane trap is positioned for rescue operations.

Just when you think that the year can't become more challenging, forest fires unlike any we've seen in our area break out. The crisis that began in September put this community and our shelter's capabilities to the test.

While the fires may have subsided, our community is still working to recover from the initial impacts. Greenhill is assisting in search and rescue efforts, working side-by-side with first-responders. Animals found in the disaster areas are provided with life-saving care and safe shelter. We continue to house animals for people who lost their homes to the fires. We have taken in a number of displaced animals from the area, and are continuing to search for their families.

As challenging as these days have been, there have been a number of bright spots. Every day we are reuniting pets lost in the fire or brought to us for emergency boarding with their families. And during this crisis, the outpouring of support from the community and from around the country was overwhelming. Thanks to donors like you, Greenhill was able to provide crates, supplies, cat litter, and over 8 tons of pet food for families displaced by the fires.

We've also been able to take a moment to reflect on the fact that without the incredible new shelter that you helped build, we couldn't have addressed this community's needs. The new scalable housing for dogs and cats allowed us to have enough space for all the animals brought to us while families evacuated their homes. The new veterinary center allowed us to provide and coordinate needed veterinary care for animals suffering from fire and smoke related injuries. Our new lobby and entrance spaces allowed us to receive, distribute, and coordinate the distribution of tons of supplies to families in need.

Thanks to you, Greenhill has been able to meet the challenges this community is facing. Thanks to you, Greenhill is able to ensure that animals are safe and families with pets have a safety net.

And then everything changed

Veterinary Medical Hub

The last report we sent out through GlobalGiving about our building project was in early February. At that time we announced "the Veterinary Medical Hub is nearing completion." And then, just a few weeks later, normal life as we knew it came to a grinding halt as the world turned its attention to stopping a global pandemic.

Through it all, Greenhill continued caring for the animals. We quickly implemented increased cleaning and physical distancing protocols, and I'm happy to report that there was never a moment in which there was a gap in our critical services.

We continue to shelter and provide care for animals in need - those that are lost, abandoned, abused, or suffering through a crisis with a human family member. We continue to find new, loving homes for animals without families. And we've increased our pet food and supply bank for families with pets who are struggling financially. Thanks to donors and partner organizations, we were able to distribute over six tons of food throughout Lane County over the past two months.

And, yes, the Veterinary Medical Hub is now operational. Our veterinary team is able to perform spay / neuter and other critical surgeries in the new facility. We still have a few more finishing touches to put into place, but we are now working with the essential pieces. Thank you for helping us get here.

Over the next few months and into the coming years we anticipate an increase in the work that we do on behalf of the animals and the people connected to them. We know from past experience that challenging economic times bring hardships for both people and their pets. We also know how important pets are to us all. Pets are a comfort to us when we are scared or alone; pets are calming during stressful times; and pets teach us about the importance of compassion, caring, and love.

With your support, Greenhill will be able to provide care for pets and people in need, even as those needs increase.

Greenhill's building project that you helped support is the foundation upon which we can enter into this new phase. This project has given us greater capacity to meet the needs of this new reality, whatever the future may hold.
