The winter season at AMP Libearty sanctuary is always a challenging time for the team who work there. As the sanctuary is in a mountainous area, the winters are especially harsh, with severe snowfall, heavy blizzards, and bitter frosts.
During the winter, it is essential the 69 hectare sanctuary is accessible in order for the bear food truck to reach the feeding points. The roads must be cleared of snow and ice daily, for the safety of employees and visitors who need access to the sanctuary.
As the weather cools in the fall, the bears prepare by eating a lot more. The additional fat helps them stay warm in the cold and protects them if they hibernate. However, as food is provided all the way through the winter, some bears never go into hibernation and the ones that do don’t sleep for long periods.
Bolik, the giant gentle bear with chocolate fur, has hibernated for the first time this year! This is a lovely update for him, as it is such a big step in his rehabilitation journey, and he has been sleeping for the past couple of months. Now temperature is rising and nature is slowly waking up, Bolik has left his dent and is showing his face again.
