Dear friends,
It’s now been almost one year since we started training and mentoring 10 farmers in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan, who dedicated themselves to trialing the agroforestry method using best practices adapted to local conditions that YUM has researched since 2018.
The following testimonials highlight the positive impact of the program on the lives of these local farmers. Participants from various age groups and genders share their experiences, emphasizing the knowledge and skills they’ve gained. Together, we have learned to deal with challenges and celebrate successes, and we sincerely hope that more farmers in the area will join us in cultivating their lands using agroforestry methods.
Mrs. P, 46 years old
I’m so happy because I can decide for myself what plants to grow, and most importantly, I’ve been taught valuable knowledge and can consult with both YUM and my fellow group members.
Mrs. N, 37 years old
I feel so happy every time I open the window and see the garden full of diverse plants. The harvests have also increased, allowing me to sell them for extra income. Additionally, I’ve gained so much knowledge from the training provided by YUM, such as organic planting techniques, using the hexagonal system, checking soil pH, and making wood vinegar as a natural pesticide for plants.
Mr. S, 54 years old
The vegetables are crispier, tastier, and safe to consume. Moreover, I’ve gained new knowledge and experience in organic farming and can serve as an example to the community about agroforestry farming systems.
Currently, we are finalising a manual on agroforestry that has come out of the research and day-to-day practice that we have done together with the 10 pilot farmers.
Our journey is far from over as we step into the next phase of the project which is to start training 200 more farmers in the next 3 years! We hope that you’ll continue to support this project, and share our successes with your friends and family.
With all my appreciation,
Vanessa
