First of all, thank you once again for your generous support!
This project has been very dear to our hearts since 2018, when we invested in establishing an agroforestry model set in 1,5 hectares of land owned by the foundation. Initially the land was sandy and acidic. Our team on the ground has been working tirelessly on this agroforestry model plot. The first few years were focused on creating the nursery, marking and opening the land, and creating drainage ditches since there was an extraordinarily high water table which could have easily destroyed the roots of our plants. As we mentioned before, Central Kalimantan has one of the most difficult soil conditions to work with!
After creating beds and adding lime due to the low pH, we installed irrigation pipes to safeguard from possible extreme dry conditions and fires. Timber and fruit trees were planted using intercropping and combination planting.
Today, we want to show you some of the results of this hard work. The trees planted have finally produced fruits such as oranges, papaya, pineapple, and many more. Recently, our team also planted a rambutan tree (a popular local fruit plant in Indonesia) and it has started to produce fruits as well. We are extremely happy with the results!
This pilot is day-by-day proving itself to be a good model to be replicated by smallholder farmers to practice sustainable land use. Your generosity has been amazing, however, we still have a long way to go if we want to start implementing our project, working with community leaders to create awareness and start training the smallholder farmers.
