On 19th September, Reef Check Malaysia (RCM) coordinated a nationwide clean-up effort, along with a host of partners, in conjunction with the 34th International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICC). We were joined by 3,424 volunteers who organised and participated in the clean-up which took place in 70 locations across 11 states in Malaysia.
This year, 11,276kg of trash was collected and removed from these beaches. The top 5 items found were plastic beverage bottles, cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic bottle caps and plastic grocery bags. Some unusual items found included a carpet, a fibreglass boat and a liquid gas cylinder. These beach clean-ups are part of RCM’s long term campaign to reduce marine debris, specifically plastic waste.
The ICC effort in Malaysia was supported by Garnier Malaysia (platinum sponsor) and Flextronics Technology (gold sponsor). 32 other organizations partnered with Reef Check Malaysia to lead clean-ups, including Colas Rail Asia and Coca-Cola Malaysia.
