STAND the Haiti Project Winter 2025 Update

By Morgan Denny | Vice President

Hello STAND fam!

I hope this update finds you warm, happy, and healthy this winter! As I am sure you all are aware of by now, Haiti is still in crisis mode and it does not look to be changing for the better. Gangs are still controlling most of the capitol as well as the roads in and out of the capitol. Not only do they have control, but they also recently burned Bernard Mavs Hospital to the point where it is no longer functional. Bernard Mavs was one of the few hospitals in Haiti that had neurosurgery, a NICU, and could support a patient on a ventilator. We have sent hundreds of patients to that hospital over the years and were deeply saddened to hear what had happened. Luckily no one was hurt in the fire, but so many people no longer have access to care that they need.

Luckily our clinic is still safe and thriving. We see hundreds of patients a month in our adult clinic and with our pediatric partner clinic 5 Star Rehabilitation. Although we are now separate entities Five Star and STAND continue to collaborate and work together to provide the best care to our community.  In our adult STAND clinic, we continue to treat people with orthopedic conditions, strokes, perform wound care, and host several community education fairs that focus on diabetes prevention and management as well as blood pressure management. Our therapists are amazing and work so hard to keep the community healthy.

5 Star continues to see hundreds of patients in the pediatric clinic as well as do home visits. The pediatric nurses also go to the local hospital when one of our kids is in the hospital to ensure that they have an advocate and they are getting the care that they need. They also run the nutrition program and personalize nutrition regimens for each child in the program. It is a ton of work! But our crew is very motivated to keep our kiddos healthy and do everything they can to make sure that happens. 5 Star is also working hard with their education programs hosting several sessions about nutrition, how to care for children with disabilities, and basic hygiene best practices.

Although our clinics are still open daily and providing care for the community, the cost of everything in Haiti has gone up exponentially. Our costs are about 60% more than they were last year at this time and we have had to be very careful with all the utilities that we use. Our clinic is the only free clinic open in the area and we do so much to support the health of the community. We really need your support to help keep our clinic open. Every little bit counts!
