Hug Project Update: Northern Thailand Investigation
Case Background
On March 20, 2024, an arrest was made in a human trafficking case involving a woman who trafficked her two young daughters to a foreign national. The Anti-Trafficking Unit of the Royal Thai Police initially shared the case details with The Hug Project to provide support and assistance to social workers involved in the rescue and care process.
This case presented numerous challenges, requiring over a month of careful preparation due to limited resources. Upon arrival in Pai, authorities discovered the absence of a child-friendly interview environment. Through collaborative efforts, the space was eventually transformed into a welcoming and safe setting for the children.
Thanks to this collective work, the two sisters—ages 4 and 9—were safely rescued. They are now residing in a secure, registered protection shelter operated by our partner organization, where they have access to education, counseling, and trauma-informed care.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the Transnational Criminal Investigation Unit of the Homeland Security Investigation team, and the Central Investigation Bureau for their collaboration on this international case. Your support was instrumental in bringing about a positive outcome and a safe path forward for the children.
Current Update: Sentencing
On March 18, 2025, the final verdict in this case was announced:
• The mother of the victims was found guilty under Thailand’s Anti-Human Trafficking Act (2008), Child Protection Act (2003), and the Criminal Code Procedure.
• She was sentenced to 84 years in prison and fined 980,000 THB. While her sentence is technically suspended, she is required to serve time in prison.
• The foreign national involved—a U.S. citizen—was arrested by the U.S. Homeland Security Investigation team. He was sentenced to 210 months (17.5 years) in federal prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release, for violations related to the production of child exploitation material.
