M (not her real name) was rescued when she was 13 years old. Her mother left her, and her offender is a family member. All she has left is her grandmother. M is now 17 years old and has just completed 11th grade. She struggles to stay in school and is at high risk for exploitation. The school knows about us and reached out for help. Initially, they wanted to expel her, but we met with them and explained our commitment to working with and advocating for her. We helped the school understand the effects of trauma these children face. The school agreed to give her another chance. When we first met with the school, she was in 11th grade. She is now in her senior year and hopes to graduate in four months.
Our social work support involves taking her to see a psychiatrist monthly. Your support has continued to help cover her medical bills and her rides to the hospital. Our social worker takes her along with her 70-year-old grandmother. Our team has promised her that once she finishes high school, we will help her get a motorbike. When we met with her, we had to confront her about the choices she makes for her life. It was a difficult conversation, but we hope she understands that we care. At the end of the meeting, she told us not to leave her and asked us to continue warning her and being direct with her. Despite the difficulty of the conversation, she appreciated it as a sign that we care about her.
Often, we value the result of the rescue operation and forget that the journey to healing is a long one. Our team is very grateful for your support and for being a part of this girl’s life.
