Taking The Library To On The Road

By Cassandra Wilson | Communication Manager

Nyaka works hard to reach rural communities and promote research, reading culture, literacy, and access to educational materials through its Kutamba and Nyaka Blue Lupin community libraries. Offered library services include photocopying, internet usage, scanning, learning how to use computer membership subscription, and more.

We believe every child deserves the ability to read and learn even those outside of the Kutamba and Nyaka Blue Lupin Library areas. This is why Nyaka Kutamba and Nyaka Blue Lupin community libraries facilitate and organize satellite and mobile libraries, library clubs, and outreach activities to expand the reach of our libraries. The satellite libraries are managed by teachers of Nyaka Primary school as well as Kutamba and Nyaka Blue Lupin Library librarians. Librarians and teachers select books according to the users’ needs then packs and transports them to a designated place where community members can go to read books, share stories and experiences at their convenience. The majority of readers who participate in satellite libraries are primary school children. During satellite sessions, many people participate in reading activities. Places like Kayeje, Nyarurambi Primary School, Rwenyerere Primary School, Bunyinya, and Nyakagyezi are visited. Satellite and mobile libraries are helping people who would like to access Nyaka library reading services, but are unable to due to either being in distant places or not having time during the day.

In 2022, it’s estimated more than 10,000 children, students and community members benefited from all library services including satellite and mobile libraries.

Thank you for helping us grow literacy throughout rural southwestern Uganda!
