Strengthening safeguarding and looking ahead

The event held on September 8, 2024, in Vratislavice nad Nisou (Czech Republic), brought several important achievements in helping to protect the rights of Roma children affected by parental imprisonment.

Approximately 280 Roma children and their families participated in this project, which featured football games, music and art workshops and dance performances, specifically designed for and by children.

Significantly, it brought together key stakeholders, including community leaders, organisers and families, helping to raise greater awareness about the challenges often faced by Roma families affected by imprisonment and the importance of continued support and safeguarding measures.

Strengthened child safeguarding measures

A significant outcome of this project has been the enhancement of child safeguarding measures within Romodrom. The organisation has now further aligned its child safeguarding policy with the standards and policies of Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE). Key improvements include:

Clearly outlined procedures for responding to child safeguarding concerns.
Integration of child safeguarding risk assessment and mitigation into Romodrom’s strategic framework, ensuring that all activities, programmes and operations are assessed for potential risks to children.
Practical annexes added to the child safeguarding policy, following the COPE Network Toolkit and with adaptations to local needs.

These strengthened policies reinforce Romodrom’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for children affected by parental imprisonment.

Positive impact on the Roma community

The impact of events like this extends far beyond the day itself. By providing a space where Roma families can come together, celebrate their culture and engage in positive interactions with the broader community, this gathering played a crucial role in helping to break down stigma. The combination of cultural performances, sports and creative activities fostered among Roma children a sense of belonging and pride, helping to reinforce the resilience of the community.

Sustaining momentum in 2025

The event’s success has generated enthusiasm for continuing similar initiatives in 2025. Future events aim to build on the foundations established this year, further ensuring that Roma children and families impacted by imprisonment continue to benefit from these supportive spaces.

Celebrating Roma culture: a day of sports and comm

On Sunday, September 8, 2024, 280 Roma children and families impacted by parental imprisonment came together in Vratislavice nad Nisou, Czech Republic, for a vibrant day of sports and leisure activities. This event not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Roma people but also helped foster a profound sense of belonging among all participants.

Event organisation and activities

The afternoon was filled with an exciting and diverse programme, orchestrated by regional director Andrea Štastná. She was joined by DJ Pája, who played a crucial role in creating a lively atmosphere throughout the day.

Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities tailored to different interests and age groups, ensuring that everyone found something enjoyable. The lineup included:

Football tournament: Children engaged in a football game that promoted teamwork and sportsmanship.
Martial arts workshop: Led by experienced trainers from the MMA club BFC Liberec, this workshop introduced children to the basics of martial arts.
Roma dance performances: Five Roma dance groups showcased their rich cultural heritage through vibrant performances.
Comics workshop: Renowned artist Pavle Novák guided a workshop where children could explore their creativity through storytelling and art, allowing them to express themselves in new and exciting ways.
Musical concerts: The event featured performances by popular musicians Jan Pohlodko and Vala G, who entertained the crowd with their engaging music, encouraging everyone to join in the festivities and dance.
Raffle with attractive prizes: Boys had the chance to win a haircut from a local barber shop, while girls could have decorative gems applied to their faces.

In addition to these engaging activities, free refreshments were provided to the 150 children and parents who participated in the football game.

Throughout the event, there was a strong emphasis on celebrating Roma culture. The performances, workshops and activities reflected the rich traditions and artistic expressions of the Roma community, allowing participants to take pride in their heritage. This celebration of culture was integral to the day, fostering a sense of identity and belonging among attendees.
