Malaika Guardians 2024: quality education in TZ

Dear Malaika supporters,

We are glad to announce the release of the 2023 Annual Report of Malaika Children's Friends!

This document is not only a summary of the activities we’ve undertaken but also a testament to the dedication of everyone involved—donors, staff, and volunteers—in providing a safe environment, medical care, and quality education for all the children at Malaika, who have come to us from situations of great hardship.

2023 has been a year of great achievements. Six students reached significant milestones: one young woman graduated from university, and five others completed their high school education. Through our Outreach program, two more children were reunited with their families, and during the summer, we joyfully welcomed three new young children.

Thanks to the generous donations we received—exceeding our current operational needs—we were also able to complete the construction of a new candle-making facility. This initiative has allowed us to cover the wages of three staff members from the income generated. Additionally, the food self-production continues to expand with the growth of our cultivated land.

We invite you to read the 2023 Annual Report for more details on the projects completed and those planned for the future. We encourage you to share it with friends, family, and colleagues, to raise further awareness of Malaika’s mission to improve the lives of children.

A few weeks ago, Malaika organized and completed a two-day training program in collaboration with the Social Welfare office for social workers and staff from other local foster homes and daycare centers.

During the two days, the training covered critical topics such as child development, adverse childhood experiences, trauma, intervention strategies, and the importance of play. The event saw impressive participation, with nearly 100 attendees, including three VIP social services directors from the capital, Dodoma.

The program was meticulously developed and conducted in English by Emily Alston-O’Connor, a social worker and consultant and a volunteer for Malaika. Additionally, to ensure the training was accessible and effective, Nivo, the local social welfare officer, provided translation services in Swahili.

Malaika’s social worker, Lucy, and the foster home coordinator, Gladness, participated in the training by sharing concrete examples from their work experiences and actively engaging in the organization of this important event. Their contributions and testimonies were fundamental to the success of the program.
