Kidsave’s program to place children orphaned from the Ebola crisis is transforming children’s lives in Sierra Leone. A recent example is Ishmael.
Through an intensive and elaborate process of locating family members, Ishmael now lives with his paternal uncle Pa. Prior to his reunification, Ishmael spent three years living in an Ebola care center. On the day of his reunification with his uncle, Ishmael and his uncle reflected on the day the biological parents were taken to Kenema when they showed signs of Ebola and never returned. Pa was pleased to have Ishmael home and vowed to help encourage other families who lost children to seek them out in the institutions.
Kidsave social workers monitor the placements of kids like Ishmael regularly to insure that they settle back into life in their villages and families safely, and that challenges reintegrating back into the community are being addressed.
