165 families who have adopted kids through Kidsave are struggling to get food each day because of covid-19 stay-at-home rules. They live in the eastern Pujehun District, where Kidsave has worked to find families since 2010 for children orphaned by war and then by the Ebola virus.
Sierra Leoneans know to respond responsibly to government directives, and as a result there are only 61 cases in the whole country as of April 23 and no one has died.
But the food markets are closed, many people cannot work and have no income right now, and citizens have been under strict lockdown measures that are likely to extend for at least 21 more days. Kidsave families are asking for help because they are running out of food and consequences are severe for violating the stay-at-home orders.
Kidsave’s partner in Sierra Leone is qualified to safely deliver food and has already responded, with Kidsave's help, taking sanitary and cleaning supplies and water purification systems to 60 homes. These supplies help everyone in the village, not just the families. Now the urgent need is for food, which will also benefit others in these villages.
Our goal is to raise $4,500 to supply 165 families with food for two months. With this we can give each family a large bag of rice, salt packets and a box of sugar while in lockdown and without income. While the government expects some help from the World Bank, it's expected to be focused on orphans and amputees, not ordinary citizens.
Please help Kidsave help those families -- many of them very poor -- who have opend their hearts and homes to children growing up without their parents. We can do so much for so little. Each donation helps!
