AFFECTO ONBOARDS COHORT 8 BENEFICIARIES

Affecto Foundation is a non-profit organization registered in Kenya to offer scholarship opportunities and mentorship programs to secondary students across the country. The program is designed to create lifelong impact for individuals and communities, by providing academically gifted learners from underprivileged backgrounds access to quality education. In the academic year 2024, Affecto Foundation is embarking on a significant expansion of its Watoto Wasome program, aiming to welcome 50 new students into the program. This strategic move will augment the program's reach, bringing the total number of students in high school to 150 and those in higher institutions of learning (universities and colleges) to 68. This increase in numbers and impact naturally necessitates an increase in funding to adequately support the growing number of beneficiaries. To achieve this, the organization is actively pursuing a fundraising campaign through GlobalGiving. The funds raised will be allocated towards fulfilling various essential needs of the students, including tuition fees for the academic year, provision of students' uniforms, supporting their self-care shopping, contributing to school development fees, covering bus fare to and from school, facilitating termly mentorship workshops, enabling participation in The President’s Award program activities, and providing pocket money. Remarkably, despite the financial constraints, Affecto Foundation has already made significant progress, having successfully enrolled 39 out of the 50 intended new students into the Watoto Wasome program. The organization has received over 500 applications from across Kenya, underscoring the widespread need for educational support. The increasing number of applications underscores the urgency and importance of the Affecto Foundation's mission. However, due to financial limitations, the organization can only accommodate 50 new students at this time. These are individuals who, without intervention, would remain excluded from the educational system, facing daily hardships that impede their ability to thrive. In the midst of this busy and transformative season, Affecto Foundation expresses profound gratitude for the support it receives from GlobalGiving. With this partnership, the organization is poised to make an even greater impact, providing education and support to those who need it most, ensuring a brighter future for these deserving students

THE PRESIDENT'S AWARD PROGRAM

The President’s Award - Kenya, known globally as the Duke of Edinburgh Award, is a non-formal education and learning framework that celebrates and recognizes young people's achievements beyond academic pursuits. The primary goal of the award is to equip young individuals with essential life skills, encouraging them to thrive in various aspects. These universal skills are acquired through engaging in activities such as physical fitness, community volunteering, and exploring a sense of adventure beyond the traditional classroom setting. As part of the award, an expedition marks the completion of each level. Affecto Foundation has enrolled all its program beneficiaries into The President’s Award. Of the 168 beneficiaries at Watoto Wasome program, 23 are in Gold level, 45 are in the silver level while 100 are in the bronze level. During the long holiday (November and December 2023), Affecto Foundation organized an adventurous journey to commemorate the completion of the bronze level for the 100 students. Two teams were dispatched to participate in the PA-K Adventurous journey at Kijabe, Longonot, where they undertook a challenging 26KM hike. The hike proved to be a memorable experience, with participants enduring elements from the scorching sun to unexpected rain. One team temporarily lost its way, only to be tracked by PA-K assessors while the rest were regrouping. Cold nights were spent sharing stories and preparing meals in the open field, with chilly mornings beginning at 5 a.m. for warm-ups and breakfast preparation. Showering, needless to say, was an interesting challenge. The journey symbolized life's lessons, emphasizing the importance of a support system for motivation during challenging moments and the joy that accompanies reaching the summit, among other insights. Our champions, at the end of the hike, couldn't conceal their smiles as they shared their exhilarating experiences. They expressed having learned the significance of teamwork, resilience, and maintaining a positive attitude. It was evident that they had forged lasting memories. Affecto Foundation is grateful to GlobalGiving for the platform to raise enough funds to facilitate the adventurous journey. The hike unquestionably served its intended purpose! We look forward to sharing more success stories together.

ONTO THE NEXT! (THE JOURNEY OF COHORT 4)

Affecto Foundation expresses heartfelt gratitude to GlobalGiving for the invaluable contribution of $6,975.41. This generous support has played a pivotal role in empowering our 13 scholars during the crucial year of 2023. Registered as a non-profit organization in Kenya, Affecto Foundation is dedicated to offering scholarship opportunities and mentorship programs to academically gifted learners from underprivileged backgrounds. The impact of this program extends beyond individuals, creating positive ripples within communities. In the recent Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams, 11 out of the 13 Affecto Scholars achieved grades that open doors to university education, while two qualified for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). GlobalGiving's steadfast support has been instrumental in enabling these achievements. The financial assistance provided by GlobalGiving covered various aspects of our scholars' lives, including school fees, bus-fare to and from school, and student self-care shopping, uniform and textbooks. Additionally, your support facilitated mentorship workshops where scholars interacted with career professionals and coaches, uncovering their talents through engaging indoor and outdoor activities. Among our 2023 successes, the 13 scholars stand as a testament to the transformative power of education. We take immense pride in their accomplishments and look forward to nurturing them as they embark on their journey to becoming changemakers in Kenya and beyond.
