The Soup Kitchen in the Library feeds Community Children daily
The Eastwood Library in Pietermaritzburg is a part of the Msunduzi Municipality Library Services of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa. It holds hard copies of fiction and non-fiction books for all ages, audio-visual material, newspapers and magazines. It also has Sections for toys, gaming, and computers and two activity rooms for study, meetings and for training. The library also has a huge vegetable garden that sustains the unemployed within the community and it has a librarian and 6 other library members of staff.
Sunitha, the librarian, observed the effects of the COVID-19 shutdowns and the attendant social upheaval in Kwa Zulu Natal that literally brought the community members to their knees leaving many people without jobs because factories and shops closed down. Many children went to school hungry and would have to wait till 10 am to get their first and only meal for the day at school. The Library realised that this would be a great impediment to learning as hungry children are likely to be unruly, distracted and unable to learn. Sunitha shared that although she is a qualified librarian of so many years with a Master’s degree in Librarianship there are things one can learn from formal education and interactions with professional colleagues but it was really the INELI SSAF program that coalesced all her pieces of training into a keen understanding that being a librarian means fully grasping the plight of members of her user community and addressing their needs, thus, placing the library at the heart of the community. The INELI SSAF program also gave her the confidence to engage with community members and leaders and taught her the true meaning of ‘If you don't like something, change it, If you can't change it, change your attitude’
Sunitha and her staff secured a gas stove, gas cylinder, pots, plates, cups, bowls and spoke to business people and church leaders within the area to come on board to sponsor the soup kitchen. The library was able to provide porridge (mealie meal, oats and sugar) or soup and bread daily. Every morning, children who were on their way to school were provided with a nutritional meal, enabling them to think better, learn and excel.Their families also took a container of food to feed themselves during the weekend. They secured different types of stakeholders within the community to donate and support the Soup Kitchen because they marketed the program with the belief that their library is based on the concept of communities leaning on each other and using the strength of its people to grow and find solutions to daily problems together. Children now have food to eat before going to school and are able to learn better. On 16 July 2022 alone, 1,017 people were fed, the highest number to date for a single day.
Sunitha with joy says that “INELI SSAf program has equipped me with the confidence and knowledge to do much more for my community and to continue to drive change,to be resilient, plan, invite stakeholders to share the burden and market the program widely to get more people to come on board” The Soup Kitchen program has been sustainable and the children are growing in numbers every day while sponsors continue to support the library to run this program. Sunitha’s final words were “Thanks to INELI SSAf for making me really see that my library is about UBUNTU, “I am because we are" or "Humanity towards others".
