Project Update (Q1 2023)

By Stuart Patience | Board Member

Dear supporters,

We are pleased to inform you that in the past month we have again received several connections where we
can place a library in a box. In addition, we will most likely be able to place several locations in the
Kalimantan province in the course of this year, in combination with the training courses that take place there.

At the same time, higher production costs are a minor setback in the programme. Several publishers have
increased the cost of books, so our team had to do an extra effort to realise some of the books in the boxes.
At the same time, we are grateful to report that we succeeded by making some new connections and
enlarging our network!

Still the need is huge. The Indonesian government has reported that more than 65% of children in Eastern
Indonesia are below the Ministry of Education department minimum standard in reading. This is one of the
lowest rates in the country, and higher than the World Bank assessment of 53% of children facing
learning poverty nationwide. You can find the latest World Bank report and other research findings about
literacy in Indonesia on our website Research and Writing  section.

As ever, we remain hugely grateful for your generous support towards our long-term work for literacy in
Indonesia.

Best wishes and salam literasi,

Stuart Patience
