2023 is off to a good start with our citizenship program. We have over 30 active cases and frequently get requests for assistance on more. We have taken on several new clients as referrals from other clients who have gotten their ID cards.
Since the start of the year, we have worked in Mae Suay, Wiang Hang, Fang, Chiang Dao and Mae Fah Luang areas of Northern Thailand. We anticipated that the need for citizenship assistance would slow down as more people are aware of the process to register their children, but we are getting more and more cases each year.
Some of the cases are relatively easy and will just require a DNA test, but some are more complicated. We still have many cases that have been submitted for correcting errors in the paperwork over a year ago and still have not been processed. This is why we have to follow up constantly at the government offices to pressure them to process paperwork. There is still a lot of corruption in this area of government, most recently the citizenship head official of one county was arrested for selling citizenship cards to Chinese businesspeople but wasn't processing the paperwork for people who had the right to citizenship. We continue to work on these cases and are hopeful that the new person in this position will have more integrity.
