Empower a Girl in Guatemala: Education after COVID

Throughout these years, your donation has been fundamental in continuing to support the education of the 36 girls in Retalhuleu. At the end of the 2019 school year, 100% of them promoted to the immediate ninth grade.

According to the Ministry of Education of Guatemala, in the department of Retalhuleu in 2018 a total of 19,149 young people were enrolled in the basic cycle, of which 77% promoted the grade, 18% did not promote the grade and 5% dropped out of the school system, which reflects that when there is systematized accompaniment of students the results and effects are positive. In other words, the project’s methodology is generating effective results in the students, since they are motivated and want to finish their high school education.

During the visits to the schools, with the support of the directors of the educational centres, the registration of each one of the girls was verified, where it was detected that 12 were not attending their respective classes. Therefore, on behalf of the project, visits and tutoring were carried out to these cases in order to determine the causes of their absence, thanks to this action, 35 girls are currently registered.

During the period of November and December, 75% of the girls go out to work in their communities or outside of them, which means a risk of dropping out of school. In other words, since they receive an economic aid to their studies, they see this as a quick option to cover their needs and contribute to their homes, leaving their education in the background, as happens with several girls in the community of Canton Ayutia, which is why, at the beginning of this year, massive visits were made to the families to remind them of their commitments and responsibilities.

During the visits to the educational centers, collective counseling was held with the scholarship students to determine the existing needs and what was determined is that some did not have school supplies, shoes and tennis shoes for the physical education course.

Your economic contribution to the scholarship students is bearing fruit, they are discovering their potential, their skills and abilities that will help them break the circles of poverty in their family.

Your donation has been vital to change their lives

During the year 2018 in the department of Retalhuleu, the Ministry of Education of Guatemala registered 19,149 students enrolled in the high school cycle, of which an average of 6% dropped out of the training process, which means that many people do not prioritize or do not have the resources to complete their academic preparation. For this reason, thanks to the support and your donation, 100% of the girls who benefit from a scholarship have finished their education without difficulties, guaranteeing the continuity of their training and generating better opportunities for their lives.

Your contribution in this second consecutive year, has given the opportunity to each of the girls who received a scholarship to acquire their educational supplies and above all, to continue to set goals for their future lives. Now they are moving forward with the development of their life guide focusing on the professional aspect, which will be presented at the end of 9th grade.

This time we want to emphasize on Evelyn and Marcelina, their commitment, contribution, academic performance and, above all, the solidarity with their classmates of this two young women with scholarships. They have several qualities and skills, that have helped them to be the best in their class and, especially, the leadership and empowerment they provide to other young women to continue their studies.

They comment that “being a scholarship holder has given us the reassurance of having better opportunities when we grow up, above all it has allowed us to develop other life skills”.

They also highlight the good performance of Arleth, who wishes to finish her high school degree and continue a career that will allow her to fulfill herself professionally and be able to contribute to her family.

When we teach them to dream, their destiny changes

Your contribution has been transcendental in the education of the young girls; during these 2 years they have been shaping their character and above all now they have a vision to continue studying, because of the better opportunities to which they can have access to.

The accompaniment provided by the project seeks mainly that the girls finish the school year, so that they have the tools and information necessary to develop their life guide, emphasizing the professional aspect. The extracurricular training provided has allowed them to jointly develop the life plan. Within this process, the talks, motivation and experience of the former scholarship holders is a main component to the definition of the girls’ goals and dreams, which will change their destiny.

Such is the case of Kristel, who has been supported with a scholarship since 2015, when she was in the 4th grade of elementary school, being a vulnerable case of drop out because her mother works in the capital city since she was 4 years old. She has been supported by her grandmother at all times. The young girl has virtues and values that make excel: dedication, respect and collaboration in school and in her community.

Thanks to the elaboration of her life plan, she has defined her goals, and the one that she visualizes next is to finish High School, her desire is to study a career in where mathematics is applied as administration or economy. Another of her dreams is to graduate so she can be able to help her grandmother, whom she considers as her mother.

Kristel mentions that thanks to the 5 years she has been supported, she has discovered her potential and above all they have taught her to dream and have goals in her life.

The effects of your contribution are visible in the life of each of the girls, since they are willing to continue studying and continue to reap important successes in their lives.

Without your contribution, young girls like Kristel would have left their studies, however, your donation is giving her the opportunity to change her future!
