Give a little. Gain a lot!

The August Little by Little Matching Campaign is a week-long campaign designed to help celebrate the power of the African Angels network, that will see Global Giving match donations up to $50 at 50% with $60,000 in matching funds and $8,000 in bonus prizes. African Angels is has a Global Giving Reward Status of Superstar, during the campaign we will awarded an additional 10% match on eligible donations.

It takes a village to educate a child, and we are asking you to spread the word about our work, and how lots of little donations, hopefully on a recurring monthly basis, will help support our work, educating the children of Chintsa East, in South Africa.

A little by little campaign is as little by little we change the futures of children who attend African Angels.

It's been a busy month.

Lou Billett was named the 2019 Businesswoman of the Year in the Social Entrepreneur category.

We held our first Charity Golf Day last Friday which saw 74 players hit the beautiful Olivewood Golf Course here in Chintsa East, South Africa, all to raise funds to run our amazing school.

Growing better men

Our Siyanqoba mentors

Earlier this year one of the mothers at African Angels, and a friend, was murdered in a domestic violence incident, that rocked me, and still does. I have had, and have, a lucky life, one full of opportunity, kindness, and love. Yet I live in one of the most violent countries in the world where 62% of kids grow up with absent fathers, and 8 women are murdered every day.

I'll just let that sink in for a bit.

8 women. A day.

I also founded a school where many of the children live in an environment seeing violence, abuse, dysfunction and going without (insert food, services, a toilet of any kind, sometimes love and kindness) every single day. My friend's death made me think - what are we doing with our boys? Is education enough? How do they learn to be better men?

Last night, in the community hall, we launched Siyanqoba (see-a-n-click-orba) that means 'we are victorious'. In collaboration with The Character Company,men in our community who are positive male role models will implement The Character Company's curriculum and meet with our boys every week, helping them to grow into men who live the five honorable values - courage, kindness, self-discipline, honesty and respect.

Not one of these men are paid to be a mentor. They are involved because they want our boys to grow up to be better men. My work is to see our mentors up skilled, developed and supported so they can continue investing into our boys.

I am privileged to have such fine men in our community who will join me on this journey of growing better men. We are taking baby steps, supported by The Character Company team. It won't bring my friend back, but maybe some time in the future, we will have more men who live the five values, than those who don't.

African Angels Independent School is a charity in South Africa who deliver a quality primary school education to children who would otherwise not be able to afford it, with some amazing results. We are relentless in ensuring our learners, who all come from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, can reach their full potential, and go on to create their own educational and employment opportunities in the future, forever changing their own lives, that of their families and communities, and ultimately, South Africa. African Angels receives no Government funding, and exists only by donations and fundraising. Since 2013 Mercedes Benz South Africa has believed in our vision and supported us. Join Mercedes Benz by supporting our work - nation building through education in South Africa. There is an African saying "It takes a village to raise a child". We say "It takes a village to educate a child." Welcome to our village.

Our vision is for each child to reach their full potential. We have seen three of our learners from 2018 accepted into quality high schools. Dominic was accepted into Queens College in Queenstown on an old boys bursary. We are delighted to have a new partnership with this fine boys school. Luvuyo and his proud dad Raymond. Luvuyo entered Selborne College (East London) from 2019 on an academic scholarship. Thank you to the Selborne Foundation for this opportunity! And as we mentioned in our last newsletter, Linako has been accepted into Grade 8 at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in Johannesburg.Our first girl to go to this fine academy, but definitely not our last!

Fundraising News: Andy Tudhope and his colleagues from Status came over the December holidays, volunteering their time and energy to renovate our grade 8 class AND raised over R100,000 in cryptocurrency for African Angels. #status #takesavillage

Thanks to Harris family at Morningside MICA for making African Angels the beneficiary of their annual Christmas party, and for their guests' generous donations of stationery and randelas.

Talisman Hire and the East London Golf Club are all running promotions to benefit African Angels .. can your business offer a discount to your customers and in turn support African Angels?
