Keep a girl in school all year for $12

''I would have dropped out off school  and may be having two or  more children by now if it was not because of the sanitary kits that you people of #vfhuganda have been consitently providing me with since my primary five class three years ago upto date''. Jane, 17 year old who is now preparing to sit for her final primary leaving national exams in 2024.

Keeping girls in school and ensuring they complete their primary level schooling with good grades has been  our key objectives of the Menstrual Health and Keep a girl in School program among refugee girls at Adjumani. We do this by consistently supplying sanitary kits and providing menstrual health education to primary school girls of reproductive age. Working with the Adminstration of Fuda and other Primary Schools since 2019, we have been able to support over 8000 young girls across Adjumani with monthly supplies of menstrual kits and education which has since seen many girls enroling and completing their primary school education. We have also realised an improvement in the academic grades of these girls compared to years before our program interventions.

For example, in 2023, Fuda as one of the primary schools where we provide this program registered 10% increase in the number of girls who enroled and completed their primary school while there was 20% registered improvement in the grades among girls that we supported and sat for the final primary leaving national examinations.

Jane, represents hundreds of refugee girls that have withstood the temptations of early marriages due to family poverty and pressure of inability to meet the basics for comfortable studies at school. By engaging boys in our menstrual talks, there has been a reduced bulling and stigma from boys on girls and the boys are now supportive to girls in school rather than belittle and insult them. This has improved the confidence of the girls even during periods.

Its your generous giving that has given girls like Jane a reason to be resilient and keep pursuing their dreams in the midst of social and economic challenges they face as refugee girls. Evaline (16 years) has been among the 72 girls we supported at Fuda Primary School in Adjumani Refugee settlement. She sat her Primary Leaving Exams in 2023 and her results were recently released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) and Evaline was able to score Aggregate 15 placing her in a very strong Second Grade. 

Thanks to the support from you our donors, we managed to keep Evaline in school by ensuring all her menstrual health needs were catered for. Its this support that enabled Evaline to consitently attend her class works and improve her grades. According to school records, Evaline used to miss out 5-10 days every months especially during her menstrual periods because she did not have pads and feared redicule and stigma from boys. Her grades were not good BUT since Voice for Humanity Uganda partnered with the school and provided Menstrual Health Kits and menstrual Health Education to the girls, Evaline's and her other peers grades started to improve. ''I am not surprised that Evaline and other girls who sat their primary leaving exams in 2023 performed better than for other years, because there enough support from Voice for Humanity Uganda which gave no room for these girls to miss out on their class works''. said Mr. John who is the Headteacher of Fuda Primary School.

In 2024, we plan to reach out to refugee 1200 girls in their reproductive age with Menstrual Kits and Menstrual Education so as to keep them in school and ensure their grades improve.
