Did you know that since the London Paralympic Games of 2012, athletes with an intellectual impairment have been able to compete in the Summer Games in a limited number of events in athletics, swimming and table tennis?
Later this year, in Paris, we look forward to watching the world’s best athletes compete for what is arguably the highest accolade in sport – a Paralympic medal.
But did you also know that athletes with an intellectual impairment have never competed in the Winter Paralympic Games?
For more than 14 years, Virtus has been closely with the International Paralympic Committee and, more recently, the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) which is the new International Federation of para skiing, to make this happen.
Marc Truffaut, Virtus President explains "Our priority is to ensure that athletes with intellectual impairment have the opportunity to compete in Nordic and Alpine skiing at the highest level," Truffaut emphasised. “It's now time for Virtus athletes to take their rightful place alongside other elite athletes with physical and visual impairments in the Winter Paralympic Games”.
Your support for Virtus enables us to deliver sport and competition around the world but, behind the scenes, the organisation works tirelessly to raise awareness, break down barriers and open new opportunities.
Thankyou for your constant support for Virtus and helping us to deliver the dreams of athletes with an intellectual impairment globally and you will be able to read more about our work with the Winter Paralympics in the coming days on the Virtus website.
