This year started with four week-long trainings for 3rd-year midwifery students in Haiti, focusing on enhancing their ability to support survivors of sexual violence. The training, held at the Northern and Western campuses of Haiti's Midwifery School, aimed to strengthen midwives' skills in providing trauma-informed care using a multidisciplinary approach. Experts from medical, legal, and mental health fields led sessions on the unique needs of survivors, addressing the medical, psychological and legal consequences of sexual violence.
Sexual violence is a significant global public health issue. In Haiti 29% of women have experienced physical violence and 12% sexual violence. The escalating gang violence in the capital has further deteriorated the situation, particularly for minors. Midwives are crucial in providing care to survivors, often being the first point of contact and playing a key role in prevention, care, and advocacy.
Help stop the violence against women and girls by reinforcing midwives' commitment to accessible sexual and reproductive health services and addressing gender-based violence as a human rights violation. Midwives in Haiti remain dedicated to ensuring equitable, accessible care for survivors.
