Help Haitian Midwives STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!

 “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls.”

November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. 

Haitian midwives are committed and dedicated to becoming part of the solution to end gender-based violence (GBV). Midwives are key points of access to health care for GBV survivors. They also serve as advocates for women and girls, contribute greatly to prevention efforts, and are community educators. Please unite and invest with FAHM in partnership with Haiti's midwives to prevent violence against women and girls. 

Haiti is currently experiencing economic, political and social unrest and the holidays are fast approaching. We must also be mindful that for many it is a time of increased stress, isolation and vulnerability with documented spikes in cases of GBV. FAHM asks for your continued support in spreading the word about the important work of Haiti’s midwives in providing sexual and reproductive health care and in ending GBV in Haiti. Please spread the word to your networks, friends and family as we enter this season of gratitude and giving. 

With your help, Haitian midwives are able to get the support needed to continue their daily battle to decrease Haiti's high maternal and infant mortality rate, and also to put an end to GBV. You not only enable midwives and midwifery students to get the needed education, but help combat GBV by focusing and targeting outreach and education to the public in Haiti and in the diaspora. This year, your support provided:

• Adolescent groups (girls & boys): education on GBV, sexual and reproductive health and building healthy relationships. This year alone, we have reached over 590 youth!
• Training for 39 student midwives: Intensive five-day training to midwifery students about GBV (Some of the topics covered included identification, prevention, public awareness & education, human rights, medical exam, treatment, reporting/legal issues, and mental health.)
• Social media: publicizing free resources available for GBV survivors and those in need of mental health care/support

There is still so much more to do. Our goal is to improve clinical knowledge, make resources and sexual and reproductive health education and services more readily available and accessible, and increase community awareness of GBV as a public health problem and violation of human rights.

I am pleased to share this update on the impact of your generous support. FAHM continues to provide capacity building for Haiti’s midwives so that they can provide equitable, high-quality health care in their communities and help stop violence against women. 

FAHM is largely funded by philanthropy and uses gifts like yours to assist in promoting midwifery education and leadership, the midwifery profession and midwifery model of care, and providing community education and outreach. Hait’s midwives stand strong in combating gender-based violence.

Youth Education

Thanks for standing firm with Haiti’s midwives as they continue to tackle this issue through a comprehensive, holistic approach which supports girls’ rights and gender equality by providing sexual and reproductive education and health care to Haiti’s youth. In May alone, your help impacted 160 youth. They received interactive learning sessions on hygiene, nutrition, and early pregnancy prevention and gender-based violence.

Mobile Clinic 

Your sponsorship helped reach 166 people in a very remote coastal area in the south region of Haiti. The midwives and their team were able to provide education and health screening (gender-based violence, family planning, sexual & reproductive health care, pregnancy, postpartum, newborn, and primary care).
