The world we know has changed. As social justice advocates, we are juggling shifts towards restrictive politics and threats to individuals and families that belong to our communities while facing the loss of space to defend fundamental rights. While on it, we channel a wide array of information to continue educating and presenting people with unmet justice needs. Developing capacity among those more susceptible to new policies is still a priority.
For the past five years, we have dedicated resources to empowering community leaders so that they know their rights but can also defend them and design legal strategies independently. The Community Paralegal program has revolved around dignified housing, climate justice, and, more recently, participation in a democracy. Since, at this moment, every single aspect of life - public assistance, education, health, housing, and jobs- is at risk of being tackled, we are taking a moment to reflect on the topics that can be more useful and relevant for communities.
We expect our new session of community paralegals to start in March. While we reflect on the scope, this session will be grounded on the rule of law and a collective commitment to justice and peace for our people. As usual, we will include workshops on access to information, participation in legislative affairs, housing, and economic rights. Please be attentive to our reports and keep your hopes up. The just world we need and deserve is around the corner.
