We are approaching the end 2023 with much gratitude, energy, and success stories. After several years of continuous disasters, 2023 gave us the necessary space to reflect and rethink our work toward legal empowerment beyond the scope of disaster response and recovery advocacy. This has brought up important questions and reflections on how crucial initiatives such as community paralegals can evolve to address broader issues such as the right to stay and return. One of our commitments for next year is to situate community paralegals in the middle of an agenda that addresses climate crisis, colonialism, and inequitable development. Moreover, we want to connect the progress made by this project with international questions on managed retreats, community legal empowerment, and civic engagement.
As stated, we are getting ready to start our fourth cohort. While we plan to stay in Loíza and incorporate leaders who have participated in this project since the beginning - 2020-, we hope to expand this initiative to other communities. Solidarity and the capacity to provide an integrated analysis of the impact of displacements and housing insecurity are critical. Because we are getting closer to the electoral year, this curriculum will respond to the urgency of coalition development and civic engagement. We can change our conditions, legal empowerment is part of that equation.
